Inside the Massive Spain-Portugal Power Outage: A Wake-Up Call for Europe’s Energy Grid

A state of emergency has been announced in Spain due to what is said to be Europe's largest power failure. On 28 April 2025, a massive power blackout struck significant portions of Spain and Portugal, and parts of France - causing widespread disruptions all over the Iberian Peninsula. Daily life was brought to a standstill as the blackout caused major disturbances such as halting flights, stopping trains and metro systems, shutting down traffic lights and forcing hospitals to rely on backup generators.
